Canine Good Citizen Class

Our next Canine Good Citizen course will begin on September 13, 2023.

What Is Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Class?

The Canine Good Citizen Program is a 6 week program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Often your homeowner insurance will provide a discount after successful completion of this course. For more information you may visit AKC.org, you will find an explanation and the the tasks for the class.

This class is specifically designed to prepare you and your dog for the Canine Good Citizen evaluation and award.  You and your dog will receive individualized attention, and time to practice the exercises required to pass the test. Some of the exercises are; obedience commands, on-leash walking, sitting politely to be petted, meeting a stranger, or interaction with another dog. We use positive reinforcement training techniques to create a fun and non confrontational learning environment.

How Are Classes Set Up?

Currently classes are held Weds evenings and we have two certified AKC evaluators. The class runs for 6 weeks.  At the last class the dog and owner undergo an evaluation.  Upon passing, your dog can receive a certificate and title from AKC. You may not miss any classes during the course to be eligible to take the test.

Requirements?

There are no prerequisites to joining the class, and all breeds are welcome.  Bring proof of rabies certification and that the dog is registered (collar tag or microchip).  The dog must be on a leash and in your control at all times (4-6 foot lead recommended).  No choke collars are allowed; prong collar, flat collar, fur saver, or harness are fine.  Make sure you bring a bag of treats and a hungry dog, since a hungry dog is a very attentive dog.  You must also bring clean up bags for any field defecation.

Location?

The current CGC class is being held at Veterans Memorial Park at 4140 Coronado Pkwy, Cape Coral, FL 33904. We are meeting near the restrooms located on the north side of the park. Please let us know is you have any questions.

Our training field is located behind the German American Club, 2101 Pine Island Road, in Cape Coral.  Drive to the very back field.  You may drive through the gate onto the field and park along the fence. When you arrive please walk your dog along the fence line and then return dog to your vehicle before signing in.

Tuition is $150 for the entire 6 week session, which includes the test at the end.  The fee is payable in advance.
